A useful shortcut: the PN number is the bar value. PN10 ≈ 10 bar, PN16 ≈ 16 bar. But it is not the MPa value — PN16 means 1.6 MPa, not 16 MPa (16 MPa would be around 160 bar, a very different pressure class entirely).

PN isn't the only rating system you'll encounter. SCH (Schedule) ratings under ASTM/ASME describe wall thickness rather than pressure directly, and SDR (Standard Dimension Ratio) is used for PE/HDPE piping under ISO 4427. PN16 is not automatically the better choice. The right class depends on:

  • Maximum working pressure of the system

  • Operating temperature

  • Pipe and fitting material

  • Fluid being transported

  • Pressure fluctuations, water hammer or surges

  • The applicable piping standard for the project

Does PN16 Mean the Fitting Can Always Handle 16 Bar?

No — and this is the point most buyers miss. A PN16 designation applies at a specified reference temperature, usually 20°C. As operating temperature rises, the allowable working pressure of thermoplastic materials generally falls, so a PN16 fitting running hot water is not actually holding 16 bar of margin in that condition.

  • PVC loses pressure capacity noticeably above roughly 25–30°C and is generally not recommended for continuous service past 60°C.

  • CPVC tolerates continuous service up to around 80–95°C (depending on grade) while keeping a comparable pressure class at moderate temperatures — which is why it's the usual upgrade path from PVC on hot lines.

  • PE/HDPE is rated by SDR rather than PN, with its own temperature- and time-dependent pressure curve.

Always check the manufacturer's pressure-vs-temperature chart for the specific material before finalizing a selection based on a printed PN number alone.

Choosing the Right Fitting by Pressure Class & Material

Common Pressure Rating Mistakes

  • Confusing bar and MPa. 16 bar ≠ 16 MPa — they're a factor of 10 apart.

  • Assuming PN16 always means 16 bar of real-world margin. The rating is a reference-condition classification, not a guarantee under every temperature and fluid.

  • Ignoring water hammer. A sudden pump stop or valve closure can spike pressure well above steady-state operating pressure, even on a system that looks safely within its PN rating on paper.

  • Mixing PN, SCH and SDR numbers directly. Convert everything to bar/MPa before comparing across a project specification.

How to Choose the Right Pressure Rating

  1. Determine the working pressure — identify normal and maximum system pressure.

  2. Check the operating temperature — both normal and peak.

  3. Select the material — PVC, CPVC, PPH, PE/HDPE, PVDF or PFA, based on the application.

  4. Confirm the applicable standard — PN, SCH, SDR, DIN, ASTM or JIS.

  5. Account for pressure surges — water hammer, pump start/stop conditions.
